Not "works on a phone if you pinch and zoom" — designed for a phone held in one hand, often with gloves or in a noisy environment. Big tap targets, short text, video and visuals over walls of paragraphs. A mobile-responsive platform is the baseline, not a bonus.
Break training into modules a worker can finish in five to ten minutes. A monolithic 60-minute course will be started during a break and never finished. Short, self-contained units let people make real progress in the time they actually have, and they map cleanly to discrete safety topics.
Place tablets or kiosks at shift entry, break rooms, and floor stations. For many frontline workers this is the most reliable access point. The platform has to support shared-device use without forcing each person through a slow full login — which leads to the next point.
This is the make-or-break detail. On a shared kiosk, a badge scan or a short PIN gets someone into their own training in seconds. A full email-and-password login on a shared screen is enough friction to kill completion. Sign-in should respect the device reality: fast on shared hardware, secure on personal phones.
Plants, warehouses, and field sites have dead zones. Where workers are in low-connectivity environments, content that can be accessed offline and synced when a connection returns prevents the "it won't load" dead end that stalls completion.
A workforce that isn't all English-first needs content in the languages they speak and a heavy lean on visuals and demonstration over text. This isn't only an engagement issue — for safety training it's a comprehension and liability issue.

Track completion by shift, by site, and by role, and watch the segments most likely to be blocked — night shift, busiest location, no-login roles.
